Everything from duvets to winter coats. To keep your winter clothing in good condition, it must always be stored correctly to protect it from moisture.

When the time comes to reorganize your closet, the tips below will help you keep your seasonal clothing safe from mold and unwanted odors:

  1. Wash your clothing with only a small amount of detergent and no softener, using settings that will provide extra rinsing. Any particles of detergent that are not removed can cause yellowish stains. Whenever possible, dry outdoors in fresh air and always make sure your clothing is completely dry before storing it. Storing damp clothing will generate unpleasant odors and the possibility of staining from mold. It can also encourage proliferation of mites or other insects.
  2. It is also recommended that you should avoid ironing your clothing if you’re planning to store it for a long time, since this can also cause yellowing.
  3. To prevent your clothing from taking on that “storage” smell that can develop over time, bags made of fabric (linen or cotton) will be your strongest allies. Use these for coats, bedding, blankets, table linens, etc.
  4. It is best to store each coat on its own hanger, preferably one made of wood, as this will preserve the clothing better.
  5. To prevent distortion of their shape, shirts and jackets must be stored properly folded, with buttons fastened and zippers zipped.
  6. Clean rugs and carpets before storing them. In addition to the usual vacuuming, take them to a dry cleaner, then roll them up before wrapping them in paper and adding a moth control product. Always store them horizontally, never vertically, to prevent deformation caused by their own weight.
  7. Whenever possible, store shoes in boxes in a separate location, to prevent the spread of any unwanted odors. Remove any adhering dirt or mud and make sure the shoes are completely dry, with no trace of moisture. A protective cream product can be applied to help preserve them better, and use of a shoe tree, or at least some wads of newspaper inside, will help maintain their shape.
  8. Avoid use of plastic boxes. For both clothing and shoes, boxes made from fabric or cardboard breathe better and are the best option for proper preservation.
  9. Inspect your closets and wardrobes, and make sure they remain free from any sources of moisture.
